Before the Renaissance, three churches were built here in the fourth century and dedicated to Christ the Savior, St. John the Baptist and the Virgin Mary.
After the demolition of the three pre-existing churches, the cathedral was rebuilt between 1491 and 1498 for Cardinal Domenico della Rovere, bishop of Turin. The work was entrusted to Amedeo da Settignano Caprina said Meo, who introduced the new forms of the Renaissance in Piedmont .
Turin, became the capital of the Duchy of Savoy in 1563, welcomed the Shroud in 1578. After demolishing the apse of the Renaissance cathedral, an extraordinary chapel was built to protect it. The dome of the Chapel of the Holy Shroud, designed by Guarino Guarini.
In the night between 11 and 12 April 1997, the Chapel of the Holy Shroud was devastated by a raging fire that broke out between the scaffolding of a section being restored. The Shroud was saved from destruction because it was at that time kept in the cathedral choir, outside the chapel.
